The word "Jade" can refer to specimens of either Jadeite or Nephrite. Its derivation is from the Spanish piedra de ijada or "hip stone". This comes from the past belief that it was a protection and cure for kidney diseases. In ancient China, it was long used for carving religious objects. In pre-Columbian Central America, it was valued more highly than gold.
